One of the dams on the Columbia River, McNary Dam produces 8.7 billion KWH of hydroelectric power annually. Construction was by the U.S. Corps of Engineers and was begun in 1947. The immense structure includes a spillway 1310 feet in length and a 1422-ft powerhouse. It impounds a lake that extends 70 miles upstream from Umatilla to Richland WA
Hat Rock State Park, located off U.S. Highway 730 nine miles east of Umatilla,
lies on the south shore of Lake Wallula behind McNary Dam on the Columbia
River. Hat Rock was the first distinctive landmark passed by the Lewis and
Clark Expedition on their journey down the Columbia, and is one of the few
remaining sites not underwater.
